We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a notable new portrait to the Museum collection—a portrait of Baltimore native and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) by African American contemporary artist Nathaniel K. Gibbs (1948-2018). The large portrait was done the year of Marshall's death. 

Nathaniel Gibbs was born and raised in Baltimore, attending Frederick Douglass High School, earning a BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from American University.  In addition to portraits, he is known for his depictions of everyday life, imagined historical scenes, and landscapes. Gibbs was commissioned to paint many prominent African American figures, including former Mayor Clarence “Du” Burns, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Cab Calloway, and Abel Wolman, in addition to painting Marshall.

This is the first Gibbs piece in MCHC's collection, and also the first portrait in the collection of the iconic Marshall who was pivotal in civil rights legislation, including arguing Brown v. Board of Education. To be able to tell this story through the lens of a well-known Black artist with a reputation for such portraiture is rare. We look forward to displaying this piece in a new civil rights exhibition opening in February 2022.
