“No other creative field is as closed to those who are not white and male as is the visual arts,” [Ringgold] said. “After I decided to be an artist, the first thing that I had to believe was that I, a black woman, could penetrate the art scene, and that, further, I could do so without sacrificing one iota of my blackness or my femaleness or my humanity.”

After receiving a Creative Artists Public Service program (CAPS) grant to create a public work, Faith Ringgold originally offered a mural to her alma mater, City College. When City College declined the offer, Ringgold decided to collaborate with incarcerated women at the Correctional Institution for Women on Rikers Island, formerly the Women’s House of Detention, on a work featuring women playing professional basketball which was hung in facility’s gymnasium for many years.

The 2021 basketball court renovation at St. Nicholas Park, based on Faith Ringgold’s work, “Windows of the Wedding # 1: Woman,” 1974, brings Ringgold’s largest public work almost, but not quite, to the campus of City College, literally in the shadows of Shepard Hall/St. Nicholas Terrace.
