#repost  purelyjess If you had told me a decade ago that my first trip to the annual Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital would be as an invited guest/speaker, I don’t know if I would have believed you. 😅

And yet, I spent the morning laughing with my current and past national presidents before my talk and I spent the afternoon sharing a stage with the NAACP, Campus Voter Project and Backbone’s first major partner, When We All Vote. 🤯 

Grateful for those who see my work and continue to speak my name in spaces I have yet to enter (kris_thedaughter victoria_juste1). Also thankful to share some wisdom with my collegiate sorors from across the country as they work to mobilize our newest voters on their campuses and beyond. Here are a few things I shared:

1. The powers that be are afraid of Gen Z and the political power they’re already wielding. Live up to that reputation. 👻 

2. Local elections matter because they have the most direct impact on you and your community. If you don’t believe me, look up how many local races in your state were won by just one vote last year.

3. When it comes to mobilizing our unhoused neighbors, remember that most people who are unhoused live in hotels or on friends/family members’ couches. They’re often going to work, using cell phones and being ignored by campaigns and elected officials who overlook them.

4. When it comes to mobilizing people around complex issues like climate change or the prison industrial complex, use personal stories and plain language: simple terms that break down the issue in ways that are accessible to everyone. If you can’t explain a topic to a five year old, you don’t know it well enough. 

WE are the ones we’ve been waiting for. Now let’s get out the vote! #GOTV #YouthVote #DDNC #DST111
