March 27, 1988. I had gone over to a friend’s house to watch WrestleMania IV on pay-per-view, but my friend’s dad decided at the last minute that he wanted to watch the “Clash of the Champions” instead, a free wrestling special on TBS from the WWF’s then-rival promotion, NWA.

I was disappointed, as I had been excited to see the “Macho Man” Randy Savage compete in a tournament for the vacant WWF Championship that night.

But I’ll never forget the main event of the Clash, as a young, jacked-up, bleached-blond, face-painted neon @Sting pushed the NWA Worlds Champion Ric Flair to a 45-minute draw. It was one of the best matches I had ever seen and immediately propelled Sting up into the rankings of my favorite wrestlers.

After that event in Greensboro, NC, I dressed up as Sting for Halloween and I would paint my face like him (but in my school colors) when attending high school football games.

Fast forward 36 years and I’m in Greensboro this weekend, ready to attend #Sting’s farewell match with @AEW in the same Coliseum where he had that career-making performance with the Nature Boy. But more importantly, I’m here to support someone who has become a role model, mentor and friend, as I’ve been blessed to work with him these past four years.

If you don’t know the story of Steve Borden, the man behind the now black-and-white paint, I would encourage you to read the article he wrote for the @PlayersTribune:

After living the wild life of a rock star (drugs/alcohol/sex) early in his career, he accepted Christ, who completely turned his life around. His testimony is a powerful one and he is now a dedicated family man, a humble leader and servant, and a shining example for the wrestling community to look up to.

Seeing the outpouring of love, respect and admiration from his colleagues and his kids over these final days of his legendary career has been amazing and inspiring! I can only hope to make such an impact on those around me, and leave such a legacy for my family.

#ThankYouSting 🦂
