This #SummerXMoody feature is choosing to spend her summer giving back to the community. SLHS student Greta Thane is a person who stutters, and she recently volunteered with blankcenterstuttering’s Camp Dream. Speak. Live., an evidence-based treatment program for children who stutter that offers a paradigm shift wherein rather than attempting to fix stuttering, all participants are empowered to stutter openly, communicate effectively, speak confidently, and advocate meaningfully.

“The Blank Center is a dream come true for me and everyone who stutters. The Blank Center CARE Model has empowered me to be my most authentic self. It has provided me with a community of people of all ages who stutter, which I have never had before.”

Greta’s favorite part of the life-changing, scientifically grounded CARE developed by Dr. Courtney Byrd and offered via Camp Dream. Speak. Live. is watching the kids grow their confidence and communication skills. She said it’s a beautiful thing to witness. “When I experienced the positive atmosphere at camp, I could not help but think back to my childhood and how much I would have benefitted from a place like the Blank Center at the kid’s ages.” She said the participants are receiving the best treatment possible, and she loves seeing her community of people who stutter get the respect and education they deserve.

One of Greta’s most powerful memories from Camp Dream. Speak. Live. was on the last day, when all the kids bravely stood up in front of a crowd of 200 people, self-disclosing and sharing what they wish the world knew about stuttering. “Watching these children, stuttering openly, self-disclose in front of crowds, it reaffirms my belief in the power of self-disclosure. It inspires me to believe in myself and my ability to self-disclose in my everyday life.”

“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “The Boys in the Boat” are some of her favorite movies she watched this summer. She can’t wait to watch “Twisters” and “Inside Out 2!” What movies are you looking forward to watching on the big screens this summer?
