Meet Aaralyn Burt ’27, a rising sophomore from Kingsville, Texas.

Aaralyn, a political science and international studies double major, has always been interested in criminal justice. When they heard about Trinity’s International Criminal Justice Program summer trip in Bosnia, Aaralyn knew they had to participate. 

The main focus of the program was to highlight and understand the legacy of the Bosnian genocide. “We saw many aspects of the war, such as mass graves and camps, and there was always a survivor or veteran available for us to ask questions,” Aaralyn says. “We always had daily debriefs and discussions on what we learned and observed.” 

Being abroad in Bosnia immersed Aaralyn in a new environment and culture. “I’ve gained several communication skills and learned to adapt due to the language barrier,” Aaralyn says. “Coming from a small agricultural town, I wasn’t familiar with public transportation, so being in Bosnia exposed me to this. I couldn’t get this kind of physical experience and learning opportunities in a classroom.” 

Aaralyn also gained a new perspective from their study abroad experience. “Oftentimes, we hold stereotypical and limited views of places overseas,” Aaralyn says. “I met many Bosnians whose favorite bands ranged from Taylor Swift to Deftones, and each person had their own unique experiences. In the end, people overseas are more similar to us than we might expect.” 

Aaralyn feels experiential learning is essential in developing skills, perspectives, and knowledge that a typical classroom setting can’t always provide. “I feel as though direct experiences and situations aid in the process of learning,” Aaralyn says. “Experiential learning has helped me further understand the perspective of those outside of the U.S. and how international affairs properly function.”
