#MichaelGambon, who died this week at 82, is being celebrated for his decades-long career, especially for one generation-defining character in particular: Professor Albus Dumbledore in #HarryPotter. ⁠

Gambon took over the role from #RichardHarris, who played Hogwarts' Headmaster in the first two movies until his death in 2002. He left big shoes to fill, but Gambon was ready for the challenge, and did something fans of the franchise weren't expecting — he made it his own.⁠

In #TheSorcerersStone and #TheChamberofSecrets, Harris played #Dumbledore as a character you felt you could trust implicitly, due to his soft-spoken mannerisms. Gambon took the role in a completely different direction, embracing his darker side, making him erratic and suspicious. In 2016, he told theoxfordunion, "When I went on to play Dumbledore, I knew how to play him. I can’t tell you how, but you get something inside you that tells you what you’re going to do. The script informs you of the process, sort of. Good ones do, bad ones don’t."⁠
