Per sources, beginning in 2021, Northwestern Athletics will adopt a new NICKNAME and LOGO. It has been unannounced what the new nickname to replace “Wildcats” will be at the moment.

The topic over the nickname change dates all the way back to the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s, when the student body campaigned for a new name for Northwestern sports, claiming “Wildcats” was too generic. The name they campaigned for was “Purple Haze,” after Jimi Hendrix’s arguably most popular song with the same title. In April 1972, the nickname of Purple Haze actually won a non-binding student vote and was endorsed by Northwestern’s student newspaper, Daily Northwestern.

It is unconfirmed if they will reconsider “Purple Haze” or not but personally, I don’t think it would fit with the new era theme.
