Mel and Collier Lawrence (L to R), sisters and runlittlewing teammates, at age 14 and 17, racing in the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invite in 2003

Mel: “It was my first time running here, and I was nervous. It’s hard to know what this course is going to feel like on race day. This was Collier’s sixth time running at Mt. SAC, so she knew what to expect. Just like every race, the gun went off and I tucked in right behind her. I was following and learning.”

There is always going to be a teammate or coach with more experience and knowledge, and they are there to be leaned on and learned from. But also be confident in the things you do, learn from them, and take those experiences with you, because one day you’ll be the older one sharing your experiences.”

Collier: “Our team was national ranked that year and Mel and I had gone 1-2 in almost every race up to that point. I remember being focused on getting out and putting Mel and I in a good position to attack the hills, knowing she would tuck in and stick to me like glue from the gun.”
