A week after volunteers arrived for training in Ohio, three civil rights workers went missing in Mississippi. 

James Chaney, a black Mississippian, along with Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, two white northerners, disappeared while investigating the burning of a church in Philadelphia, Mississippi. 

Their abduction intensified the new activists’ fears, but Freedom Summer staff and volunteers moved ahead with the campaign.
