Senior Sophie Leung-Lieu will be attending the University of Texas at Austin next fall where she will double major in mathematics through the Polymathic Scholars Honors Program and in liberal arts through the Plan II Honors Program.

“I chose UT because it has amazing resources, professors and classes,” Leung-Lieu said. “It was my best option academically, and I love the school spirit and the idea of going to a really big school.”

Leung-Lieu said being in the Polymathic Scholars program will make studying mathematics extra special.

“Math is my main major since I love the subject, thanks to Mrs. Seckar and Mr. Cowles,” Leung-Lieu said. “There’s a lot of things you can do with math, and I think it makes the most sense in my brain, which is why I chose it. The honors program for math has me take honors classes and choose what to study with that and write a thesis about it.”

The Plan II honors program at UT provides small discussion-based courses.

“The other major is Plan II honors and the whole whole program is about interdisciplinary studies, so I get to take different classes and have access to taking whatever I want—more than just math,” Leung-Lieu said.

So far she doesn’t have a plan on where she wants to take her degrees beyond college.

“I also chose math because you can kind of do whatever you want with it,” Leung-Lieu said. “It’s a good general study and will help me get a baseline of what I want to study in the future.”
