How do you measure self-esteem?

Self-esteem is the term used to reflect a person's overall emotional evaluation of their own worth:

“An individual's subjective evaluation of their own worth. It encompasses beliefs about oneself as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame."

Self-concept is what we 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 about ourselves.

Self-esteem is how we 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 about ourselves - "the positive or negative evaluations we make about ourselves."

—
Thoughts creates feelings.
Feelings influence actions.
Actions create outcomes and results (or lack thereof).
—

To improve our 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗺 (HOW you feel about yourself), it would only make sense for us to first change our 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 (WHAT you think about yourself).

How do we change the what beliefs we have about ourselves?

First, you may want to reflect on these questions:

◾ Do you base your inherent value off of extrinsic variables?
(e.g. your body; grades; accomplishments and accolades; the number in your bank account)

◾ Is your sense of worth derived from things of transitory nature?
(e.g. what people think of you; how the world sees you; your productivity; the ability stick to your diet; your tangible measures of ‘success’)

◾ Have you tied your identity to what you do; your job; your relationship; your family role; and/or what your friends think of you?

. . .

If you answered yes to any of the above, I encourage you to dig deeper.

◾ What beliefs do you have about yourself that led to these skewed assessments?

◾ What is the story you're telling yourself that reinforces and maintains these beliefs?

◾ How are you benefiting from continuing to tell yourself this story?

…In your life, work, relationships, purpose, etc...

How are these beliefs serving you?
