Today we celebrate one of the most significant events in Australian history and the man, along with his team, that made it all happen - Eddie “Koiki” Mabo. ⠀⠀
June 3, 1992 - The High Court of Australia’s land mark decision overturning the legal doctrine of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one) on which the British claimed possession to recognize the legal doctrine of Native Title into Australian law. ⠀⠀
Eddie Mabo fought for land rights but his vision was far beyond just that. He wanted equality for his people. ♥️
⠀⠀
My family comes from the Duaureb people of Meriam, the same small island in the Torres Strait where Eddie Mabo comes from and fought so hard to protect. Murray Island - Home of the Native Title. ⠀⠀
I am so lucky to be a part of such an amazing culture that is so significant to Australia’s history and I’m fortunate to be in a position now to educate others on the importance on this event, what it means to all Australians and what it should mean to people in the US also. ⠀⠀
Because the Mabo case is the prime example of bringing two completely different peoples together so there can be a law that is right, and strong. ⠀⠀
Could not be more relative in our world today. ⠀⠀
Happy Mabo Day!!! ⠀⠀
