Instructional coaching isn’t a panacea for every challenge facing teachers in the classroom, but if done with careful assessment, it can help reinforce positive mindsets for both students and teachers, especially new teachers. “Co-teaching can be effective at accelerating teacher skill-building,” writes Jo Lein, founder of a coaching nonprofit.

After years of testing and refining—as well as making mistakes along the way—Lein and her colleagues came up with a decision-making matrix for intervening when a teacher needs support. The matrix is built around two factors: the teacher’s level of self-efficacy and their level of belief in students.

Team Teach: If the teacher has high self-efficacy and low belief in their students, the teacher and coach teach the class together after carefully dividing responsibilities, like alternating roles between opening the lesson and providing guided practice. This strategy helps the teacher understand “that the students are capable of meeting expectations and learning outcomes with the right guidance and support,” Lein writes.

Live Coach: If the teacher has high self-efficacy and high belief in students, the teacher teaches the class; the coach doesn’t address the class directly but offers guidance to the teacher, such as using hand signals or offering quick feedback to the teacher when students are completing a task.

Model Teach: A coach should model if the teacher has low belief in self and students. The coach teaches the class and the teacher has a chance to observe a number of teacher moves and how the students react to them. “In the debrief, the coach speaks to each move, decision, and result,” Lein writes.

Teach and Support: If a teacher has low belief in self and high belief in students, the teacher teaches the class, and the coach addresses some students directly, or occasionally the whole class. When a teacher feels defeated, the coach can help “reset student behaviors and reestablish key procedures,” Lein writes.
