It’s time to rethink our definition of what a “good school” is, researchers assert in a new study.⁣

That’s because the usual signals we rely on to gauge the quality of a school—namely, high test scores—are often incomplete and misleading, the researchers found. ⁣
⁣
The study looked at over 150,000 ninth-grade students who attended Chicago public schools and concluded that schools that emphasize the social and emotional dimensions of learning—relationship-building, a sense of belonging, and resilience, for example—improve high school graduation and college matriculation rates for both high- and low-income students, beating out schools that improve test scores.⁣

In an interview with Edutopia, C. Kirabo Jackson, the lead researcher and a professor of education and social policy at Northwestern University, explained that schools with robust impacts on student well-being aren’t getting the recognition they deserve. Students in these schools not only have a more positive experience, but are also more likely to graduate and attend college, especially “vulnerable student populations who don’t tend to do very well in the education system,” Jackson said.⁣

The findings emphasize the need to take a multi-pronged approach to student well-being, and are a reminder that schools—and teachers—can influence students in ways that are difficult to measure, and may only materialize well into the future.⁣
