Integrating technology into world language classes can be an important tool to improve the quality of lessons and pique students’ interest in learning languages, says high school Spanish teacher Elena Spathis. ⁣

Here are some of the tech tools she uses to help students practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the target language: ⁣
⁣
📌 Challenge Students with Quizlet: Creating a “study set” or a list of questions and corresponding answers only in the target language is great practice for novice learners, Spathis says. ⁣
⁣
Introduce a bit of friendly competition between classmates by clicking “Live” on your study set and have students work in teams to pair questions to their corresponding meaning.⁣
⁣
📌 Speak, Listen, Draw with Pear Deck: Use the Pear Deck Chrome extension to create a combined listening and drawing activity, Spathis recommends. As she reads a description aloud in Spanish, students draw what they hear, and then each student shares what they drew with the class. ⁣
⁣
📌  Video Pen Pals with Flipgrid: Students can create short videos of themselves speaking in the target language using Flipgrid, says Spathis. To make the activity more collaborative, have them view submissions from their classmates and leave comments on each other's videos. She also recommends partnering with a class at the same level—in a neighboring district or abroad—to give students a virtual pen pal. ⁣

📌  Incorporate Music with Lyrics Training: ⁣Bolster students’ listening skills with Lyrics Training, an app that has users watch a music video and type out the lyrics to the song based on what they hear. The tool offers music videos in a variety of different languages and allows users to compete against others to see who can fill out the lyrics the quickest. ⁣

📌  Online Discussion with Padlet: ⁣As an alternative to an oral conversation, engage students in written discussions in the target language using Padlet. Create a prompt and have students respond with text, images, videos, or links, and then weigh in on each other’s responses. Spathis suggests this as a pre- or post-reading activity.⁣
