Is overuse of social media or the risk of catching Covid-19 the most pressing problem during the global shutdown? 

It depends on your vantage point.

A recent survey of 2,027 parents found that race, for example, fundamentally altered the way parents perceived threats during the pandemic.

Eight of the top 10 issues “most commonly rated by all parents as a ‘big problem’ are frequently associated with changes in lifestyle and may be related to efforts to control the Covid-19 pandemic,” explain the researchers in the survey, highlighting the repercussions of lockdowns and social distancing on childrens’ lives.

But the way parents ranked those threats broke down along racial lines. When identifying the top health concerns during the pandemic, White and Hispanic parents agreed that social media and bullying were most important; they were also worried about issues like depression, vaping, and stress. Among Black parents, however, racism and Covid-19 were the #1 and #2 issues by substantial margins, with 82% and 73% of parents citing them as top health concerns. By comparison, racism and Covid-19 were the #6 and #8 concerns for Hispanic parents, respectively, while neither Covid-19 nor racism cracked the top 10 for White parents at all.

Another poll conducted recently by Axios/Ipsos mirrored those findings, concluding that while White parents were sanguine about a return to school, 55% of Black parents and 40% of Latino parents were extremely or very concerned about schools reopening too quickly. 

Given recent events—from increased calls for racial justice to a realization that Black families are more likely to experience economic hardship or die from Covid-19—the survey brings into sharp focus the racial inequities that shape parents’ priorities and perspectives. As we reopen schools in the fall, we must be mindful of the systemic issues that inform the viewpoints of all stakeholders.
