As restrictions ease and states begin to reopen schools for in-person learning, teachers should consider which virtual teaching strategies are beneficial to continue when all students are back in the classroom, writes elementary teacher Paula Díaz. ⁣

“We’re making teaching history, and we have the opportunity to adapt teaching to the new normal,” said Díaz, who says hybrid instruction encouraged her to revamp her teaching. From virtual manipulatives to instructional videos, here are some tools that Díaz found useful during the past year.⁣

🎥 Make Flexible Group Assignments: Social distancing regulations may require students to stay in their assigned seats, but that doesn’t mean they have to be in the same small group every time, says Díaz. She recommends using a video conferencing platform such as Webex to mix up the group assignments, allowing both remote and in-person students to interact with one another. ⁣

🔁 Record Video Lessons: Not only do videos play a crucial role in making remote learning more accessible and engaging for students, they are also “a helpful resource when students are absent or if parents want to understand how we work in class,” writes Díaz. Teachers can record lessons in advance using video platforms like Seesaw or Canvas Studio, and then pause the video to answer questions from the class in real time. On their own, students can replay the video as many times as they need to review materials. ⁣

✍️ Explore Interactive Tools: Learning to work with collaborative tools prepares students for the workplace in the future, says Díaz, who recommends tools like Google Jamboard, Google Slides, and Google Docs. For lessons that benefit from hands-on learning, Díaz creates different digital manipulatives for students to maneuver. This way, learners can “have those kinesthetic movements” regardless of whether they are virtual or remote, she writes.⁣
