Long hours and heavy workloads have long contributed to teacher burnout, and more than one in 10 teachers quit their jobs each year. With the new challenges brought on by pandemic schooling, schools, more than ever, need to put practices in place that help teachers create boundaries and have dedicated time for self-care, say educators. ⁣
⁣
Don’t know where to start? Here are a few ideas school leaders can use to promote the well-being of their staff. ⁣
⁣
🤝 Lend a Hand: At Fall-Hamilton Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee, teachers can message a colleague to come relieve them from the classroom for a few minutes if they need a breather. This approach, called “Tap-in/Tap-Out,” encourages teachers to work as a team and ask for help when they need it.⁣
⁣
⏰ Build in Time for Staff Development: Instead of making professional development (PD) an add-on, Whitsitt Elementary School in Nashville organizes their schedule to give teachers time for regular collaboration and PD while students participate in enrichment activities. This schedule “ultimately improves [the] school’s instructional capacity, student learning, and culture and climate,” writes principal Justin Uppinghouse. Other schools, like Arcadia High School near Los Angeles, are carving out time during the school day for staff to learn wellness practices like yoga and meditation. ⁣
⁣
💬 Set Boundaries: “Encourage teachers to take breaks from work and set boundaries,” such as taking a quick walk during the school day or not answering emails after 6 p.m. at night, writes Katy Farber, a professional development coordinator. Educators also recommend administrators regularly check in with teachers simply to find out how they’re doing—and how they can support them.⁣
⁣
“Consider who on your staff might be experiencing significant stressors, and make it clear to them that you value their wellness and would like to help them develop a strategy to cope,” writes Farber.⁣
