Seymour Papert, renowned mathematician, computer scientist, and pioneer in using technology to enhance learning, was born on February 29, 1928. He believed that children should be allowed to learn by exploring and experimenting. ⁣

“Children learn best when they are actively engaged in constructing something that has a personal meaning to them—be it a poem, a robot, a sand castle, or a computer program,” Papert said. Constructionism, his theory of learning, helped shape approaches like maker education and project-based learning. A founding faculty member of the MIT Media Lab and co-inventor of the programming language Logo, Papert believed that computers could empower children to create new things.⁣

Papert was devoted to working with children. He led projects at MIT to introduce computers and programming to children in schools, and later worked at the Maine Youth Center, helping teens with substance abuse and emotional problems. Papert died on July 31, 2016.⁣
