Teachers cannot do their jobs effectively unless they are in a good state emotionally and physically, according to Bryan Goodwin and Susan Shebby, the chief executive and a managing evaluator at McREL International, respectively. "Feeling powerless dampens teachers’ sense of efficacy," they write in ASCD’s Educational Leadership.⁣

Here are a few strategies Goodwin and Shebby recommend to improve teachers’ well being and empower them to do their best work: ⁣

⭐ Collective Problem-Solving: Feelings of isolation and exhaustion often induce stress and burnout among teachers. Instead of hosting hours of professional development, give teachers time to collaborate with peers to foster a “we’re all in this together” mentality, Goodwin and Shebby write. Encourage teachers to observe and learn from each other so they can solve problems collectively, rather than trying to tackle them alone. ⁣

⭐ Small Goals, Big Wins: Don’t just focus on the long game, Goodwin and Shebby suggest. When school leaders set incremental goals, they help teachers “achieve small successes” that make them feel accomplished—and better positioned to work toward larger projects and tasks. ⁣

⭐ Lead by Example: Teachers’ effectiveness “can be threatened or enhanced by a few influential or vocal teachers,” according to Goodwin and Shebby. Identify optimistic, influential teachers and empower them to serve as leaders for their peers. By challenging and inspiring each other, teachers will feel a strong sense of connectedness and work more effectively as a team. ⁣

"By creating these conditions, school leaders can help their educators develop a shared sense of efficacy—what's often called teacher collective efficacy—a belief that together, they can help students succeed," they write.⁣
