For far too many students, a sense of belonging in school doesn’t come naturally, but teachers have the power to make them feel at home, says science teacher Ian Kelleher.⁣
⁣
“By deliberately addressing belonging in our classes, we can help build deeper engagement, deeper learning, more fairness, and a more positive whole child school experience,” writes Kelleher, who shares several strategies for reaching—and supporting—all students in your classroom.⁣

Audit Your Classroom: Assess whether all students “feel safe and valued” and “can bring their full self to each class.” Ask yourself probing questions about your teaching, like “Do you give all students the benefit of an equally long wait time when you ask questions?” and “Are there any biases present in your words or actions?,” Kelleher says.⁣
 ⁣
Vary Your Teaching: While inherent “learning styles” are a myth, students do have preferences. Abandon habitual practices and teach in different modalities to pique students’ interests, while also pushing them to step outside their comfort zones.⁣
 ⁣
Elevate Their Study Skills: Don’t assume students have developed good study or testing habits and feel comfortable with your classroom rigor. Coach them to adopt evidence-based practices, like teaching someone else or breaking studying into small chunks, to build their confidence—and improve their learning.⁣
 ⁣
Deliver Bite-Size Feedback: Emphasize that feedback is not meant as a reprimand to students, but that “you have high expectations of them and that you believe in their potential to meet them,” Kelleher asserts. Before you give out a grade, deliver small critiques that students can process and act on quickly.⁣
 ⁣
Get Metacognitive: Encourage students to develop metacognitive habits that will serve them long after they leave school, suggests Kelleher. Explain that everyone struggles with something and “frame their times of challenge as a need to find a better strategy” and try again.
