Teacher Mary Davenport writes that a conscious effort at her school to adjust the curriculum in response to the challenges created by the pandemic has led to careful thinking about what really matters for fostering deep learning. Homework, for example, doesn’t necessarily make sense at the moment.⁣

Her school examined its curricular priorities through the idea that deep learning is slow: “Deep learning requires time for retrieval, practice, feedback, reflection, and revisiting content; ultimately it requires struggle, and there is no struggle without time.” That productive struggle, however, need not include homework, which Davenport says was previously integral to her brisk “get it done” approach. Now her mantra is “slow down and reduce.”⁣

Reducing homework at her school has been a team effort. The teachers have adopted a framework to limit homework: The best option, they’ve agreed, is to have students complete all of their work during class, and to have a 30-minute time limit if homework is necessary. ⁣

Davenport checks in with each student to make sure homework they have across all of their classes is manageable, and she adjusts her assignments in response. When she finds out that one week is heavy with work in other classes, she allots more time during class for her assignments and even delays or alters assignments to ease the burden on her students.⁣

Davenport has found that when she regards eliminating or reducing homework as a social and emotional intervention—and as a way to give students a break from their screens—they’re more invested in the teacher-student relationship. “When students trust me to take their time seriously, when they trust me to listen to them and adjust accordingly, when they trust me to care for them…they trust more in general.”⁣
