Video is an essential tool for remote and hybrid teaching because it shifts direct instruction to times when students are working on their own, preserving limited classroom or synchronous time for discussions, writes Matthew X. Joseph, director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for Leicester Public Schools in Massachusetts. 

Maximizing teachers’ use of video takes intentional training and practice, and Joseph shares tips for planning PD to develop teachers’ video skills:

• Determine the goal—and stick with it: Design PD so it’s tightly focused on giving teachers solid strategies and takeaways they can implement right away for using video to foster student learning. Make sure training doesn’t veer into “how to log into Zoom,” writes Joseph.

• Add relevance: Boost staff engagement by planning PD around relevant content—showing smart uses of video in math, science, and English classrooms, for example. 

• Know your staff: Just like students, “each educator has a different ability level” when it comes to technical skills, so adjust—and if needed, slow down—training accordingly. Prepare teachers in advance by sharing goals and objectives for a session. 

• Under plan: It’s common for instructors to pack too much content into PD, leaving teachers overwhelmed and frustrated at the end. Learning to use video takes practice, so plan for extra time to allow participants to practice new skills, reinforcing what they just learned. 

• Guide teachers to use video to listen to students: Video offers a unique opportunity to hear students’ voices. “This expands the possibilities for lessons,” says Joseph, and allows teachers to use video for assessment. Share smart ideas from your teachers for getting student feedback via video with other educators in the building.
