My mom is Chinese, I grew up in Singapore, and it’s that simple. 

However, I became part of an industry that would, for my entire career, try to pigeon hole me because of the way I look. Not Asian enough. Not Caucasian enough. I look Latina but I’m not, so I don’t go near Latina roles anymore.

I have, however, been fortunate enough to have auditioned for people who saw me for who I am and what I bring to the table, beyond my being a Chinese-Jew. From Italian Stephanie Mangano in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, to understudying both Vietnamese Gigi and Caucasian Ellen in MISS SAIGON, it’s ultimately been a blessing to look different. I waited 20 years to be cast as someone with an Asian name, and my last two jobs had me playing Meiko in EUREKA DAY and understudying a character with the last name, CHEN, in LIFE OF PI.

There’s not really a point to all of this, but it’s coming to the end of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month in the United States, where identity politics is intense, and I’ve never felt like I (or really wanted to) fit in. I do know that I am incredibly happy to be mixed race, that my childhood in Singapore was utopia-esque, and that I’m sad that it’s been a very long time since I’ve made it to my mom’s hometown in Malaysia.
