The 93kg class lifted on Day 3 of the World Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Viborg, Denmark.

Home nation hero, Nicki Lentz made the most of the opportunity to squat in front of friends and family, extending his own squat world record to 400.5kg on his second attempt. Not content with this, he asked for 405kg for his third and the stamping and clapping from the Danish crowd was like rolling thunder as he approached the bar. Lentz looked confident walking it out and stood it up easily, really giving the audience something to shout about.

Kostiantyn Musiienko of Ukraine came into his own on bench, though, shooting into the lead with his 325kg opener. He was really on form, nailing 337.5kg for his second and then extending his own world record to 351.5.

Meanwhile, Lentz struggled, missing his opener - we had some tense moments here as he needed a total to be able to claim the squat world record. Relief came off him in waves as when he nailed 255kg for his second. This allowed Ukraine’s Volodymyr Rysiyev to slide past to overall second and the bench silver with 300kg.

The top three started to separate out on deadlift. Rysiyev broke the M1 total record with every deadlift, ultimately taking the deadlift silver as well as the overall.

Musiienko broke the total record with his second pull of 312.5kg and added even more to it with his final deadlift of 325kg, securing his first open world title.

Greg Johnson of US Virgin Islands won our hearts, not just with his 371.5kg world record deadlift, but with his upbeat demeanour and ubiquitous grin throughout the competition. A huge smile lit up his face at the top of the pull, and when he saw the white lights, he crumpled to the platform and pounded it with his fists, overcome with emotion. We love to see it.
