We opened Day 3 of the equipped world championships with the 83kg class.

Incoming world champion Knute Douglas of USVI faced off with Ukraine’s Mykola Barannik from the start. Barannik finished third in Stavanger last year but finished ahead of Douglas at The World Games in July so this was a battle that could go either way.

Douglas and Barannik both opened their squat with 350kg, giving a taste of how close this was going to be. Douglas pulled 2.5kg ahead on second squat but took a conservative approach and did not follow when Barannik asked for a world record attempt of 375.5kg. In the end, Douglas probably had a little more in him than the 370kg he squatted for his third but there’s no doubt that it was a smart move to conserve his energy and focus on the win rather than records. Barannik had to grind for it but grind he did and was rewarded with the world record and the squat gold medal.

Barannik is well known as a big bencher so it was no surprise that he was a long way ahead of Douglas on bench. He only got his 260kg opener but it was enough for the silver medal, behind Romania’s Andrei Nicolae Irimie who took good from the B group.
This gave Barannik a healthy 35.5kg lead going into deadlift. 

However, this lead eroded to a bare 3kg when Douglas smoked 315kg for his opener. The gap closed even further on second deads with Barannik only half a kilo ahead, that world record chip coming in very handy in the end game, as it often does.

Everything came down to final deadlift. Barannik was out first and made short work of 297.5kg. His legs locked a little early but he recovered brilliantly and let out a spontaneous laugh at the top of the pull.

With his world title on the line, Douglas approached 335kg for his final deadlift to snatch victory. It went to his knees but even with the roars of the crowd filling the hall, he could not get it all the way and Barannik took the gold with his team-mate, Vitalii Kolomiiets taking the bottom step of the podium.

An exciting finish and a great start to Day 3.
