Day 2 of Equipped Worlds kicked off with the 66kg class and we were treated to a fantastic display of equipped lifting from the lightweight men.

World Games gold medalist Yusuke Satake of Japan opened up an early lead with a massive 312.5kg squat. France’s Hassan El Belghiti also laid down a marker with 295kg for the squat silver but six-time world champions, Tsung-Ting Hsieh of Chinese Taipei, wasn’t far behind with 287.5kg.

Satake stumbled however, missing his first bench and opening the door for Hsieh to come past. Mariusz Grotkowski of Poland is well known for his big bench and he moved up to second place with his 210kg opener. In fact, the bench world record in this class has been [assed between Satake, Hsieh and Grotkowski for the last 5 years so we knew we were in for an exciting bench battle.

Satake nailed 210kg on his second, regaining the lead but the bench gods were not please today and Satake missed his third and Grotkowski only got his opener. Hsieh however was unstoppable, getting three good benches in and extending his own M1 world record to 217.5kg

Moving into deadlifts, Satake still had a 17.5kg lead over Hsieh with Grotkowski in third with 472.5kg. However, deadlifts are where El Belghiti comes into his own and his 300kg opener pulled him up to third place, only 2.5kg behind Satake. Hsieh opened with a fast 280kg and moved into the lead for the first time, incidentally taking the M1 total record into the bargain.

We speculated that El Belghiti might be in range for a world record attempt on his third but he had no patience for that and called for it on his second and 318.5kg was enough to moved past Satake by a single kilo. El Belghiti has been extending this record periodically for over ten years and shows no sign of letting up any time soon. Hsieh took 187.5kg 

Into the final round – Satake attempted 275kg to regain second place but it sprang from his grasp right at the top and he had to settle for the bronze medal. Hsieh came out and pulled 295kg to round out a perfect 9/9 performance and seal the world title, raising his fist in triumph in a characteristic gesture we have come to know so well.
