The 120kg class will lift on Friday evening at the World Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Viborg, Denmark next week and with half a dozen 400kg+ squatters in the group, we will see some mammoth weights shifted in this session.

Ukraine’s Oleksiy Bychkov has to be the stand-out favourite – he has dominated this class for nearly ten years now. He won his first World title in 2015 and has been unstoppable since, winning every single year. He took the gold medal at The World Games in Alabama this summer and he holds the total world record so he is the man to beat.

Sen Yang of Chinese Taipei will be aiming to do just that. He finally took the squat world record in Alabama, having had to forfeit it at last year’s world championships as he just couldn’t keep hold of his deadlift. His grip looked solid at The World Games though and it netted him the silver medal behind Bychkov.

He is challenged by his team-mate, Chi-Sen Tien, who is a bare 12.5kg behind on nominations. He took the bronze in Stavanger last year and will be looking to improve this year. I predict a deadlift battle for podium places. Can’t wait.

The superheavyweight men will lift as two groups. The B group will lift at 1pm CET on Saturday 19th November and the A group will close out the whole competition at 4pm CET and will be broadcast live on Eurosport 2.

At the top of the nominations, Joe Cappellino of USVI and Ukraine’s Andrii Shevchenko are well matched at 1132.5kg. These are the totals they got at the World Championships last year – Shevchenko was lighter on bodyweight that day and so finished ahead of Cappellino. Both men have stood on the second step of the podium: neither has taken an open world title. Yet. Will Big Joe Capp launch a characteristically high-risk, high reward strategy or will he take a more conservative approach with so much on the line? Only time will tell but we look forward to finding out.
