At the World Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Viborg, Denmark, the 57kg class will lift at 1500 CET on Day 2 – Tuesday 15th November.

Kimberly Johnson of USVI is nominated in first with the 550kg total she did at The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama. She just missed the podium that day but it looks like she’s in line for it this time out. Since winning the World Juniors in 2016, Kimberly has been climbing the ranks: her best result in the open so far is her overall bronze from Stavanger last year. Could this be her year to take the top step?

She will need to stay ahead of Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Tzu Huang. Last year’s silver medallist, she finished behind Johnson at the World Games with 540kg so the question is who has made the most progress since July? They have this year’s Junior World Champion, Emily Finnern of Germany, to contend with too. She totalled 517.5kg in Turkey to take the title so she has a little ground to make up to catch the top two. However, juniors improve the quickest and she put 30kg on her squat between Euros and Worlds this year, so keep your eye on her!

The 63kg class will be streamed live on Eurosport 2 and Eurosport Asia at 1900 CET on Day 3 – Wednesday 16th November. Absolute legend and many time world champion, Larysa Soloviova of Ukraine, will be looking to add another notch to her belt. She has a full set of M1 records in this class as well as the open bench and deadlift records and she leads with a nominated total of 592.5kg. This got her the bronze at The World Games earlier this year, but that was a 5/9 kind of day and you better believe she is capable of more.

Ecuador’s Johanna Aguinaga will be giving chase – she’s nominated with 570kg but she did 577.5kg in Stavanger last year so Soloviova will not have this all her own way. Aguinaga was Junior World Champion, most recently in 2015, and won the bronze medal in the open in 2017. She’s a good chunk ahead of Norway’s Lena Sjoel, so this could be a real opportunity for her to move up the rankings.
