As part of Black History Month, Huron BSU (Black Student Union), advised by Community Assistant Jeffery Hugan and led by students Jewel Storrs and James Thomas III, is holding a spirit week from Feb. 7 to Feb. 11.

“Black History Month is a time to gather and collectively celebrate the achievements of African-Americans who inspired others,” the club said in a joint statement. “It is an opportunity for us to look back on the accomplishments and legacies that have been left behind, thus allowing us to progress forward.”

Monday will be a day to dress as any Black actor and Tuesday will be a Day of Unity showcasing traditional African colors such as red, green, yellow and black. Wednesday will be HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) Day in support of Black education, Thursday as Culture Day for inclusivity and finally, Friday will be a blackout.

“Black history, our history should be taught to everyone,” the club said. “If our African-American leaders didn’t do what they did, the world would have had a different outcome. These are not just historical events to teach, they are very important historical events that empowered, helped, and changed people and the world we live in.”
