On January 7, 2022, The Weeknd released a somewhat surprising album titled “Dawn FM”. Surprising because it was only first announced and teased about two weeks earlier, so its release was rather sudden. Despite the impromptu release, “Dawn FM” did not disappoint.

The album’s theme was evident: it was meant to be in the form of a radio station (Dawn FM), and the tracks were meant to be the lineup for the station. The narration by Jim Carrey on some of the songs was very refreshing to hear, and I think the use of narration on albums is an incredibly underutilized tool that makes albums, including this one, much more enjoyable. His voice is very relaxing and speaks like a radio host, guiding you through the listening experience. Now, as for the songs themselves, there is heavy use of 70s/80s style synths that add to a “euphoric” and “nostalgic” tone of the album. While it does bear resemblance sonically to The Weeknd’s 2020 project “After Hours”, it still manages to be its own project.

The songs are pleasing to the ears, despite a couple of songs sounding similar. He also maintained a lot of the themes that he has sung about for years: love and relationships, substance abuse, lifestyle and nihilism, while managing to fit them into the radio station narrative. Some of the strongest, most enjoyable tracks included the love themed “Take My Breath” and “Here We Go…Again,” featuring Tyler the Creator. The sonically interesting but lyrically quite disturbing and sad track “Gasoline” was also a high point. Although all of the songs were good in some capacity, my least favorite song had to have been “…How Do I Make You Love Me?”; nothing personally against it, it just felt more formulaic than other tracks on the album.

Overall, “Dawn FM” was an enjoyable listening experience, and the radio station theme of the album was a very creative step for The Weeknd. I would recommend this album for any Weeknd fans, R&B fans or pop fans. In general, it's quite enjoyable and I feel comfortable giving it an 8.3/10.
