Since the late 2000’s, Los Angeles alternative rap connoisseur Earl Sweatshirt has been releasing projects to his cult fanbase. Earl has been a contentious figure in the rap scene, being a figure of controversy at times due to his unique style of delivery of his music. On Jan. 14, 2022, Sweatshirt released his newest studio album “Sick!”, which sees him utilizing his famous monotone style and delivery once again.

“Sick!” contains 10 songs, almost all of them being on the shorter end, ranging between one to two minutes. Its runtime is short, at only 24 minutes, bu Earl still manages to discuss several deep and personal topics. He talks about the themes he has brought up in previous projects, such as his upbringing, family, experience with crime and substance abuse. From the beginning, the production is easily the strongest aspect of the album; the album's instrumentals utilizes deep 808s, ambient sounding noise as well as jazz trumpet instrumentals. One thing I commend Earl for is his ability to include his storytelling and dark subject matter into a multitude of different instrumental beats, which is a difficult feat for any rapper.

Sweatshirt often flips between two main styles of delivery: his more monotone and laid back delivery, like on tracks such as “Sick!” and “God Laughs”, or his more clear and rap-influenced flow, such as on songs like “Titanic” and “Lobby (int)”. While these songs are definitely not for everyone, there are definitely some high highs, such as the tracks “2010”, “Titanic”, “Lobby (int)” and “Vision” featuring Zelooperz. The low points on this project aren’t necessarily lows because the song is bad, rather the mixing is improper and the delivery is off beat, most noticeably on the song “God Laughs”.

In general, “Sick!” is a strong addition to Sweatshirt’s already strong discography, and I can definitely see why his fans are attracted to his sound. I would recommend this to any fans of the alternative rap sound, or just anybody trying to expand their rap taste. I give “Sick!” by Earl Sweatshirt an 8.2/10.
