Junior Julianne Cucos is an artist who has won many awards and she enjoys expressing her emotions through art.

“I think it's a really easy way for people to understand who I am, because sometimes it's really hard to express myself and I'm also kind of a shy person,” said Cucos. “I don't really put out there a lot and with art, it's like anyone who sees it without even knowing me, they can relate to me or I can make someone else feel like their experiences can also be related.”

She is currently taking ceramics this semester at Huron, and she took mixed media last semester. Julianne has been interested in art since elementary school.

As much as Julianne enjoyed art very much, she also experienced some challenges with her passion.

“One challenge with art is because everyone is so different. It's really easy to feel like you're worse compared to other people. Because you see other people's things and you're like, ‘oh, wow, that's so cool.’ I kind of just beat myself up because I feel like I'm not as good as other people. Even though everyone's different in their own ways. It's just sometimes hard to see that.”

One of her favorite memories was at a summer camp. There, people were engaged in art and were focused on it and they were supportive of each other. It made her experience what an art career feels like.

Besides experiencing challenges, her passion for art is strong enough to push the obstacles away. She feels connected to many people with art.

“It creates a sort of community. And it really connects a lot of people together which I feel like it's important.”
