The city of Berkeley is set to remodel and renovate three buildings in the Civic Center area, as part of the Civic Center Vision Plan, due to underutilization, disrepair and buildings not being up to code.
 
The plan is slated to update the Maudelle Shirek Building, or “Old City Hall,” at 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, the Veterans Memorial Building at 1931 Center St. and the Civic Center Park at 2151 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. These buildings are being expanded and remodeled to accommodate gathering areas for the community and office spaces for city officials. 

With these updates, the city hopes to turn the remodeled Civic Center areas into a “prime space for civic life, culture, and the arts,” and will embrace the city’s diversity and history, according to the plan’s Vision statement.
