With every victory , the 105 year-old curse that haunts their senior counterparts seems to weaken, its grip loosening in the face of this new generation's fearless defiance.

In a thrilling display with only 12 players available, Steel City NXT secured their place in the U23 Illinois State Cup semi-finals by beating Edgewater Castle FC 3-1. 

Nicolas Espinosa had a man-of-the match performance and Lucas Ortiz and the backline - Sorich, Bedolla, Delgado, Beckman and Bechtel - held firm as Edgewater threw everyone forward late.

The team will play at Czarni Jaslo this week (date and time TBD) and the U23 Illinois State Cup Final is set for Saturday night at a neutral ground in Northbrook.

In Illinois' third largest city, the legend of a century old curse has woven itself into the fabric of local lore. For 105 years, all teams from the city have been haunted by near-misses and heartbreaks in their quest for the Illinois State Cup.

Yet, as each season unfolds, the spirit of Steel City - a four year old club - remains unbroken, driven by the hope that one day, they will break free from the shadows of the past and claim their long-awaited triumph.

About Steel City NXT:
Steel City NXT is the club's top U23 team in its third season. It is top-of-the-table in the U23 Northern Illinois Soccer League. In its two previous seasons it has won a league championship and finished second place in two Illinois State Cups.

Steel City NXT is coached by Plainfield's Anthony Skrip and trains alongside Steel City's first team in a professional environment whereby players compete for first team positions.
