Team Deakins speaks with costume designer Mary Zophres in tomorrow’s episode! Mary talks with us about the thrill she gets when she sees actors transform into their characters in front of her eyes during fittings. Specifically, she tells us stories about working with Jeff Bridges on True Grit and The Big Lebowski. We learn about the influences on and the creation of the Dude’s relaxed wardrobe and Deputy U.S. Marshal’s hat and trench coat. Mary talks about finding visual clues in the script and about how reading about the film’s subjects are sometimes as helpful to her as photographs from the period. We learn about how Mary decides to make a costume as opposed to buying one, her experience designing for the black and white movie The Man Who Wasn’t There, and how she tries her best to avoid movies with uniforms.
