I currently use bilateral cochlear implants with N8 processors from Cochlear Americas. These processors connect seamlessly via Bluetooth to both my iPhone and my Samsung S24. I am part of the google #GRID fellowship and frequently switch Bluetooth on and off throughout the day, depending on my activities. These might include phone calls, watching videos, having a taylorswift dance party with my kids, or turning off unwanted audio from ads when browsing recipes.

For calls that require more details, especially from healthcare providers or unfamiliar callers, I use the innocaptionapp .

When a call comes in and I'm not ready, my response depends on the situation:
1. I quickly place the phone near the microphone on my processor. This trick stems from my experience with hearing aids that often had feedback issues. Previously, with the first generation Kanso processors, I used additional devices like the Phone Clip or MiniMic2+.
2. If I recognize the caller, I ask for a moment to enable Bluetooth for better clarity.
3. I answer on speaker, then switch to Bluetooth mid-conversation for a smoother experience.

Nowadays, I mostly use the latter two methods and have become quite adept with them. For calls, I prefer using FaceTime for its visual aid—no worries about being in pajamas! With InnoCaption, I can automatically receive all calls through the app, choosing whether or not to view the transcript as I go.

Having practiced extensively, I've significantly improved my phone communication skills. Initially, I only felt comfortable talking to my mom due to familiarity with her voice. I remember preferring in-person appointments over phone calls, as many with hearing loss find phone conversations daunting. Navigating technology was challenging, but assistance is always available from device manufacturers and support teams.

Let me know about your devices and your strategies!
