One of the greatest feelings on earth is falling in love with something all over again. A close second is the feeling of even starting to love something you hated.

My favorite era of pop music was 2008-2014. I made playlists from all the radio hits during this time; music then all felt like summertime. We all have those songs that we’ll always cherish because they’re attached to strong memories. Whenever I wanted to relive that feeling of confidence, triumph, sadness, or introspection, I had a song to access those emotions. Music, then, was incredible already.

The moment I fell in love with it again was the same time I opened my eyes to something I didn’t enjoy that much at all. I listened to a podcast that explains and dissects the components and music production on some popular pieces. Some of the records this host would talk about were some that I really loved and some that I would refuse to hear. However, the way in which the art was dissected and analyzed began to open my mind to the “why”. Why do I like something and why do I hate the other.

My relationship with basketball was challenged on both these fronts.

My time as a ball player ended on such a bitter note; it took me a long time to play again. Photography and music rekindled my love for the game. I gained a new perspective on the beauty of it by applying the same principles of appreciating music production: study the components of the game. Last year, there was a lot of photography of macro concepts: the community, the coaches, the players crashing the paint, and the interaction & intersection of all three. This year, the game slowed down a lot more in my head to where I could see more features and details of the art.

I photograph shoes leaving the ground, arms reaching out for the loose ball, the emotions of players getting subbed out, and also the overall passion of players battling. It’s music to me now. Photography gave me one of the greatest feelings in the world: falling in love with a sport I once loved and hated.

It was always beautiful with or without me.
