A common myth out there is the idea that allowing transgender women to access gender-specific domestic violence and other shelters will pose a threat to the cisgender women in those spaces. This falsehood is not backed by data,  yet it persists. We do know that transgender women who are forced to utilize male-specific housing and shelters face high rates of physical and sexual violence in those spaces. Transgender and non-binary people are the victims of violence at higher percentages than their cisgender counterparts, but they are also less likely to go to law enforcement or seek out supportive services. ⠀
