ICYMI, it’s Jazz in July once again! We caught up with i_am_davo, a major jazz enthusiast and avid sketcher whom you might remember from 2023. Here are David’s notes and sketches for shows he caught so far from this year’s edition ✨

Richard Jackson and Friends, 5 Jul: “This was the first drawing I’ve done in a long time but turned out far nicer than I expected! I can get quite obsessive with my linework, but for Jazz in July, I try to draw live and within the two sets, hence the not-so-accurate lines.”

Grooveworks and Omniform, 5 Jul: “I caught them as they were playing some Greg Lyons originals (Vale, Greg), including his iconic Built to Last. I wanted to create a poster, so I lined the musicians up in a row and drew them tiny. And then I drew the festival logo really huge #graphicdesignismypassion.”

Weixiang Tan & Kenji Nakano, 9 Jul: “Animated, cheeky and surprising! I wanted to draw Weixiang’s signature poses (he has a few), but I decided to draw them watching each other. I really enjoyed drawing Kenji leaning into his instrument.”

Bluesy Monday, 8 Jul: “Sultry, laidback and plaintive. I wanted to capture the contrast between Anne Weerapass and Don Gomez: her energetically sashaying while he’s happily chilling out. Their rendition of Nature Boy was far more fun and upbeat than the original.”

For Those in Love, 12 Jul: “I was hunting for the perfect vantage point for this drawing and I found it! While I enjoyed all the songs, The Man I Love by the Gershwins brought back memories, it being one of the first few jazz tunes I’ve heard in my life.”

Joshua Wan and Jazz Anon, 13 Jul: “Esplanade Concourse was crowded because it was a Saturday, and I thought to work the audience into this piece. I loved Caravan and Blue Skies: Namie’s voice, with the slight vibrato, was sublime! Joshua Wan was reliable and sparkling as always.”

Jazz Rojak, 14 Jul: “The sets were great, but my vantage point unfortunately was not. Nonetheless, I tried to make it work with a lot of redrafting and I think it turned out okay!”
