#PolicyProfile: “I’ve always just wanted a career with a mission and one that helps people develop to their full potential. During my undergrad at alleghenycollege, I got involved in university leadership as a residence hall director and president of my sorority. It was around then that I started to think about a career in university administration. Now, I get to support graduate students as they find their paths. Some advice I like to give: Assess your core values, know your strengths, and pivot when needed. It’s sort of like aligning the tires on your car. You need to regularly inflate and align them correctly for the car to run its best. Stepping into this position at PrincetonSPIA has made me feel like my tires are aligned. I’m returning to my core values and focusing on the strengths I know I can bring to work through student advising and alumni partnerships. Right now, students have been asking me a lot about the future of work. We’re all navigating the new normal and learning the effects that remote work has on the workforce. The pandemic has asked us to be immensely flexible, and, as someone who is a little more extroverted and thrives in an in-person busy environment, this has been difficult for me. On the other hand, the pandemic has given us a chance to do a lot of self-assessment and realignment — something that’s been critical for my own personal career development. As a mom of two sons, working remotely has allowed me to be a stronger caregiver for my kids; I’m grateful for that. In my new role at SPIA, I hope I can improve the campus climate, whether in-person or online, and provide opportunities for graduate students to develop intellectually, personally, and professionally, ready to leave Princeton their best selves.” — Amy L.
