#WooWho: “I’m old enough to remember 9/11. I remember watching what happened on TV and immediately feeling called to serve, which now feels kind of cliché to say, but it truly did shape my life. At the same time, there was also this quote that guided me: ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’ So, I put that quote on my childhood wall, and from then on my mission was to go to the usnavalacademy, to go into the Marines, and go overseas and serve my country. I feel blessed I knew what I wanted to do from an early age, and that I was afforded that opportunity. I served in the Marines for seven years before coming to Princeton. When I was in the Marines, I deployed to Afghanistan and then to Spain. They were very successful deployments. And I guess that’s why they were so meaningful to me. I think coming out of those experiences where you face life and death situations on a daily basis, and you come out unscathed, you feel a debt to people who didn’t. Some of my Marines did not. And Marines I know, or buddies of mine, lost Marines. And so, you feel compelled to live a life that not just honors them, but also does good in the world and makes an impact. … I grew up in in Old Hickory, TN, outside of Nashville. I feel a strong attachment to that place and would love to go back and serve the community that helped raise me. There are issues I’ve been exposed to at the Woo that I’d love to work on back home. I took Heather Howard’s healthcare workshop, and saw how so many different policy areas are interconnected. For example, when rural communities don’t have internet access or transportation, they can’t get healthcare. The workshop was a great opportunity to see how businesses and government can work together to improve the lives of local communities.
