#WooWho: “In the middle of a lecture, we got the email about Princeton students not being able to come back to campus after spring break. It was a tough moment. Our guest lecturer looked at me and said, ‘What do we do?’, and I said, ‘Well, we’ll get through this.’ And the students have. I continue to be amazed by their flexibility and resiliency amidst the #covid19 crisis. And interestingly, they have been able to see concepts we’ve discussed in our policy task force play out in real time. The course I’m teaching is on health care reforms. Throughout the semester, we’ve been examining why reforming is so challenging. I’ve been encouraging students to look to other countries and how the system can work as a whole. I think part of what the students are taking away from the class is that no #healthcare system is perfect. They each have their own weaknesses. We are witnessing this now. These moments, like the one we’re facing with Covid-19, are critical junctures. They show us what isn’t working anymore and shape how we move forward. It’s also a time to step up and help, volunteer. Many people in my life are on the front lines of this pandemic. I study health care, but I wanted to get out there, so I began volunteering with the Medical Reserve Corps at one of the first testing sites to open in NJ. They have it down to an art there; it’s incredibly efficient. Everyone is working hard to make people feel better. As I’ve been working with them, though, I keep thinking about who is able to access these sites and how easily. Drive-up testing sites are great, but some people don’t have cars. Again, the crisis is exposing the cracks in our system. This and the isolation can feel overwhelming, so it’s important to find joy where you can during this time. For me and my fiancé, it’s spending time with our rescue dogs, Mason and Elvis (pictured above). They remind me to be thankful for what we do have, even in times of crisis.
