#WooWho: “People living in poverty, or close to poverty, will be the most impacted by the #coronavirus pandemic both within the U.S. and worldwide. As a humanitarian aid worker, I go to countries that are experiencing conflict, natural disasters, or their own epidemics. These emergencies represent serious disruptions where people can’t take for granted that they’ll have a place to live, an income, food on the table, access to clean water, or health care. The Covid-19 crisis is going to have a major impact on displaced populations. People in these situations normally live in very rough and uncertain conditions. Many refugees are living in very crowded, high-density camps, so transmission of the virus can be very quick. Access to basic services that would help these populations during a pandemic are weak, at best. #Healthcare, water, sanitation: These fundamentals can be scarce. Essential things we’re doing in the U.S. to reduce the spread — #socialdistancing and constantly washing our hands — these are not necessarily an option for these populations. There’s almost no way they can stay six feet apart in most camps. Refugees who fall ill from Covid-19 are not going to have access to adequate medical care. You’re not going to find ventilators in any of these small, relatively poorly equipped health centers at camps, so it’s going to be a real challenge. In the U.S., I think for most people, this is the first time they’ve seen their lives so severely disrupted, from the way they work, to the way they spend time with their families, to their kids’ education, to how they access health care, to the financial implications. This is a real shock, and it’s going to take some time. Some people will be better off because of their access to resources. But for people who depend on their income week to week, it’s going to be much tougher. We need the government to step up and make sure the most vulnerable in society are taken care of.
