#WooWho: “When I’m scared, I think of my grandma. And I channel my ‘Big Grandma Energy.’ She was quarantined without her consent because of tuberculosis. Her parents were immigrants who didn’t speak English and didn’t know what they were signing. She spoke with me about this often, and it was formative in shaping my life’s work. I think a lot about how public health and bodily autonomy reconcile. Being self-isolated because of #COVID19, this is coming up for me. I think the pandemic is showing us in neon flashing lights that we all do better when we *all* do better. Right now, students are experiencing displacement, disruption, and confusion. But as current and future policymakers, we should also see that our only limitations are collective imagination and political will. As the #coronavirus spreads, policies are being changed quickly to protect people. We are learning this is possible. We are seeing now more than ever why policy matters. It’s about life and death. The pandemic is highlighting what so many people for years were  sounding the alarm bells about. We don’t have a social safety net, a public health system, or health insurance system that’s working the way it could or should. I hope this is a collective wake-up call for transformation. I’m honored to work with the njharmreduction. As people self-isolate, we’re worried about overdoses, which is why we’re mailing out naloxone to people. It reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. There are all ways for us to help like this. You could donate to a mutual aid fund to help those in need, or call and check in on a friend who’s isolated. And to my classmates: I know we’re all disappointed to lose our physical community at Princeton. I want to thank my peers who sounded the alarm bells on #COVID19 early (at a social cost to themselves); you helped us see that public service is a lifestyle, not a profession.
