#WooWho: “In 2004 I was on my way to Dubai for work and the tsunami hit Southeast Asia. I had about a month before my next job so I volunteered for an Italian NGO in Sri Lanka. My undergraduate study was in business but after that first deployment I knew I wanted to continue working in international development and on humanitarian programs. Humanitarian aid – helping people recover from crises – felt like a much more rewarding career. I wanted to bring skills from my business background to deliver better aid programs. The contexts we work in are not the easiest, and programs are often difficult to implement, yet the impact of good and well-run programs can be huge: whether it’s reconstructed communities after the tsunami, local economic development in Zimbabwe, or providing health care in conflict zones in Yemen. After 14 years working on aid programs in various countries, most recently as country director for rescueorg in Zimbabwe and Yemen, I wanted to take a step back and give myself the mental space to think about how we could be doing development more effectively. I wanted to better understand frameworks for development and develop quantitative skills to better assess program effectiveness in the future: that’s why I came to the wilson_school. The small cohort was a plus, and Princeton is a great place for my dogs. I have two dogs that traveled with me from Zimbabwe. Chip is my 11-year-old border collie and Stitch is a six-year-old sheltie, and I compete in agility with both of them. I have been training dogs since I got Chip ten years ago: She taught me everything I know about dog training. My dogs are the best study pals, keeping me company as I work through readings and problem sets at home. We also frequently go for walks around the gorgeous campus and have Chip and Stitch pose next to various buildings and statues.
