#WooWho: “Reading #MLK’s writings transports me to another plane of optimism, to think on what we can be as a community when we envision shared goals of humanity. This idea of improving the world has long been part of my ethos. I am passionate about policy and believe it can make the world a better place. My mom’s a teacher, and my dad’s an artist. From an early age, I resonated with their pursuit of their passions. I was that kid in the Baton Rouge state capitol, spending my summer days watching legislation go through. When I enrolled at lsu, I studied economics to try to understand policy’s effects. I supplemented the degree with four minors for a wider lens. Most important for my personal growth was my exchange year in Germany. It was the first time I lived outside my hometown; meeting people from all over the world expanded my understanding of shared humanity. I used all the money I’d saved up since I was a kid and backpacked through Europe. When I got back, I realized, ‘There’s a whole world out there, and I want to be part of it. I returned wanting to put my ideas about community into action. I was living in D.C. at the time and approached my neighborhood church with a request. I asked if I could serve as a fellow to build community for those experiencing homelessness. They created a job just for me, and I ran a breakfast ministry for several months. It was amazing. When the time felt right, I applied to Wilson_School, my top choice for grad school. I didn’t apply anywhere else. I knew I wanted a rigorous policy school. I wanted to be part of a small cohort where everybody intrinsically has this humility about them and knows what it means to be a public servant—and I’ve found that here. In all the places I’ve lived (Louisiana, Berlin, #DC  and now in Princeton), I’ve kept photographs of #MLK up on my wall. They were from an old calendar I couldn’t part with. Seeing his image every day, I am reminded to ask myself: ‘What am I doing for others? How am I making the world a better place?’” – Nathan Babb MPA ’21.
