#WooWho: “Growing up in #Hawaii, security and militarization issues permeated my awareness from an early age. It’s certainly paradise on one level, but on another, it’s the state with the highest share of land occupied by U.S. military bases. Attending a native Hawaiian school, I witnessed years of ongoing tensions between the federal government and native Hawaiian communities that continue to object to the impact #military activities have on Hawaii’s lands and people. I was drawn to take undergrad courses at uofwa that spoke to the complexities of security issues, and I ultimately came to specialize in arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation. I then worked in NGOs dedicated to these areas, ranging in my #research from landmines to #nuclear weapons. My hope is that we work toward security solutions not based on weapons and persistent arms races, but rather in international institutions that leverage technologies to support and verify disarmament treaties. One bright moment that energizes me was witnessing the adoption of the 2017 unitednations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It gave me hope to see states and civil society coming together to set a clear direction, and creating an inclusive process that gave the U.N. microphone to those usually kept out of strategic security decisions — yet who are deeply affected by them, such as victims of nuclear testing in the Pacific. In the future, I hope to help craft cross-cutting solutions, both institutional and technological, toward realizing a world better enabled to invest in people rather than weapons. To girls interested in #STEM, I would encourage them to consider that their work can benefit from their artistic and creative sides, too. I’m part of projects at Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security that use tools like #virtualreality to think and design solutions in new ways.
