Researchers sourced tampons from large EU, U.K. and U.S. brands, with potentially millions of users, according to a UC Berkeley Public Health press release. The published research found concentrations of toxic metals including lead, arsenic and cadmium. 

Because the research does not measure health effects, UC Berkeley doctoral student Jenni Shearston emphasized encouraging menstruators “not to panic” and that regular exposure to low levels of metals in other environments is common. Shearston added, for instance, that pesticides and metals can easily contaminate cotton, a major ingredient in tampons.

According to Kathrin Schilling, an assistant professor at Columbia University, it is unclear whether the metals detected by the study have contributed to any health effects on users. However, future research following this study will test how much metal is leached out of the tampons and into the body.
